摘要
同中國傳統詩學的“言意之辨”相似,新批評的詩歌語義學也是圍繞“言”與“意”的關系問題展開的,特別是著重考察了詩意之生成和詩意之特質。新批評理論家區分語詞的辭典意義與第二意義,相應于中國詩學對言內之意與言外之意的區分。他們對言內之意如何通向言外之意即所謂“第二意義”的論述,對意象的隱喻價值的論述,與中國詩學的意與象應、情與景合的主張異曲同工。維姆薩特進一步在“喻體”“喻旨”之外提出“第三個類”,指出這是一種“無法用語言表達的新概念”,這與中國古代楊萬里等人所強調的在“詞”“意”之外的“味”,實有神趣相通之處。

Debate on the Relationship Between Language and Meaning: A New Criticism Approach to Poetry

Abstract:
Similar to traditional Chinese poetics, the poetic semantics of the New Criticism also emphasizes the "Debate on the Relationship Between Words and Meaning," especially the formation of poetry and its characteristics. The theorists of the New Criticism distinguish the dictionary meaning and the second meaning of words, which corresponds to the distinction between the literal meaning and connotation in Chinese poetics. Their discussions on how the literal meaning leads to connotation, i.e., "the second meaning," and discussions on the metaphorical value of images, are similar to those in Chinese poetics, which hold that meaning and image, emotion and scene should be combined. Besides "tenor" and "vehicle" in a metaphor, W. K. Wimsatt further puts forward "the third class," "a concept that cannot be expressed in language," which has the same spirit as the "relish" besides "word" and "meaning" emphasized by Yang Wanli (楊萬里) and others in traditional Chinese poetics.
